GM Corn With More Vitamins A, C, And Folate
Genetic science has been used to enhance foods nutritionally especially for poor people. Zeaxanthin riched potato, flavonoid enriched tomatoes, brassica and stearidonic acid (SDA) enriched canola ad omega-3 fatty acid and eicosapentaeoic acid (EPA) enriched soybeans are examples.
The new genetically modified crop is corn. It has been enhanced with vitamin A, C and folate. According to Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) researches explanation; 10 to 14 day old were infused with five genes: Two genes to synthesise beta-carotene, one gene for folate, one for vitamin C, and one marker gene.
Researches claim that new GM corn contain to contain beta-carotene levels 169 times than normal levels, 6-fold the normal amount of vitamin C, and twice the normal amount of folate.
The effects of GM foods on human health is still under search. It is not clear whether these GM foods have hazards or not, so consumers should be careful to consume them.
