Coffee May Has Probability To Cause Cleft Lip

The reason of cleft lip occurrence hasn’t been find yet. But x-ray, stress, some viral diseases, some vitamin deficiencies or excess may cause cleft lip.

According to report in American Journal of Epidemiology, coffee consumption during the early pregnancy may be one of the reason of cleft lip.  According to study, Norway has a relatively high incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate. Because Norwegians dirink more coffee, researches tried to find the relation with coffee consumption and cleft lip.

The study compared 573 women who had babies with cleft lip with or without cleft palate or cleft palate alone to 763 women whose children weren’t born with orofacial clefts.

According to results, women who women who drank up to three cups of coffee daily during the first three months of pregnancy were 1.39 times more likely to have a baby with cleft lip with or without cleft palate and the risk was increased 1.59-fold for women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day.

But researches say that the cleft lip reason is not caffeine alone. The women who drink coffee also generally smokes and have different diet style. There are also links with these factors. So, specialist suggest pregnant who drink coffee and smoke not to consume them too much during pregnancy and  take folic acid.

This study doesn’t seem realistic. It think cleft lip reason is genetic.
