Two Substances In Energy Drinks Have Harmful Effects

Posted by: admin In: Food News

Taurine and d-glucuronolactone are regularly used substances in energy drinks. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has delivered a scientific opinion that consuming energy drinks that include this two substances is not safe.

EU’s former Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) had an opinion about this two ingredient in 2003. According to SCF, taurine may hardly effect on brain and d-glucuronolactone may hardly effect on kidney.

The confirmed No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) of this two substances is 1,000mg per kilogram of body weight per day.

The quantity of taurine and d-glucuronolactone in energy drinks changes according to brand, country etc… So the analyses should be made more strictly and some of them should be called for a withdrawal.
