Nanotechnology in Food Packing System: Smart Packing

Posted by: admin In: Food Package| Nanotechnology

Smart packages bring out that the quality of the product decrease or the product is spoiled. Researches have studied to change the properties of package materials for many years.

One of the studies is applied in milk package. When the molecular composition of the milk change, they react with nano-particles in package and the color of the package chance. So the spoilage easily indicated by consumers and manufacturers by this way.

Researches are also trying new materials that change the packages properties other than environmental factors such as heat and humidity. For example, when the molecular structure of the package is compressed, its durability increase and so the heat transfer can be blocked. When we remain ice cream under sun, due to compressed packing material, the heat transfer is blocked and ice cream does not melt.

Also researches are trying to produce smart packages that can tell the consumers how much milk or meat is fresh. When the oxidation occurs in the package, nano-particles indicates the color change and consumer understand if the product is fresh or not.

The systems that will indicate if the package was opened or got damage by means of smart ink. Apart from these, there smart packages that indicates if the food product is sterilized or contaminated by color change. Also, there are smart systems that control gas exhaust from fruits and their freshness. CO2 exhaust from the products like cheese changes the color of the package and easily indicates if the product is spoiled.

I haven’t seen the smart packed food yet. I wonder it. It seems interesting and useful.
