Functional Beverage: Omega Coffee

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that body can not synthesise. The natural source of the omega-3 fatty acids are fishes, dark green vegetables and walnut.

Recent studies have showed that omega-3 fatty acids (α-linolenic acid, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) have beneficial effects on health  by preventing diseases such as cancer, diabet,  cardiovascular disease by improving brain development and body resistance.

Manufacturers have been produce many functional foods which are rich in omega-3. The new one is omega rich coffee. GR Nutriceutical Company, which is from Canada, is the manufacturer of the product. According to company, the new functional coffee is very good source of omega-3 and also can be used in different forms such as cappuccinos, lattes and espresso. In addition to its beneficial effects, omega coffee has almost same price with regular coffee.

Lyophilization is removing water granules from frozen material by sublimation under appropriate conditions.

Lyophilized food’s main properties are below;

  • Its taste, color, shape and odor are well conserved.
  • When product is re-hydrated, it gains its former shape and and tissue.
  • With lyophilization method, food is not threatened with heat so, there is not nutritional lost It is more light.
  • It is not necessery to kept in fridge.
  • It has long shelf life.
  • It is not necessary to use any other food additive as a conservative.
  • Due to almost 90% water lost, transport cost decrease.
  • In contrast to heat treatment, crease, constriction and extra layer does not occur during lyophilization. So, it can be easily re-hydrated.
  • It can be applied almost all kinds of food.

Researches from Mount Sinai School of Medicine has found that childhood obesity may related to phthalates used in food packaging.

Phthalates are used not only in food packaging industry not also in toys, hair sprays, shampoos, nail polishs, soaps, lotions, lubricants, paint, pesticides and cosmetics. Earlier findings showed phthalates causes several adverse on on human health. Some of the are kidney, liver and testis diseases.

The new adverse effect of phthalate is obesity. Researhes said that high levels of the packaging chemicals found in the children’s urine may play a role in obesity by disrupting hormones that regulate growth and development.

These all problems should force authorities to ban phthalates usage in food packages or other material that can contaminate the chemical to human. Package industry should also nonhazardous chemical as an alternative.
